SHIMCA (the Scottish Highlands & Islands and Moray Chinese Association) was founded in 2004. The Association has now over 550 members from all over the North of Scotland and Moray areas. SHIMCA is a recognised charity which is a non political, non religious and not for profit organisation. Our AGM is held once a year during the October school holidays as we are a family oriented Association and we encourage participation from all age groups.
Annual subscriptions are currently £15 for members aged between 16-59, £10 for those aged 60 or over and students or those not in employment; children aged between 0-15 are free. Our membership is open to Chinese and other Nationalities who live, work or studies in the Highlands and Moray and who are interested in our customs and way of life.
SHIMCA works closely with the Adult Learning Inverness High Life Highland in providing weekly basic and intermediate level ESOL English Classes for our members and other ethnic groups at our Multicultural Centre.
SHIMCA provides a platform and a voice for the Chinese community, access to information and most importantly the provision of activities for the older members which includes a Senior Luncheon Club, held every 2 weeks with meals provided by local Chinese Takeaway owners and also Bingo to promote an active brain. We also invite speakers from Service Providers to give appropriate talks and information to our Luncheon Club members such as Stay Safe, Benefits, new Legislation, Health talks and Annual Health Checks.
SHIMCA works in partnership with the Ethnic Minority Law Centre to provide a monthly Law Advice Service on immigration and employment issues.
Since 2008 SHIMCA is an authorised Chinese Visa handler for the North of Scotland and Moray.
SHIMCA will continue to empower the Chinese people in the North of Scotland to create a vibrant and united community which acts as a bridge to other communities thereby fostering a harmonious society where diversity is valued. Our long term goal is to work towards the inclusion of Chinese Language in the Highlands & Islands and Moray Schools’ Curriculum and to create opportunities for students to embrace and celebrate the value and differences of Chinese Culture and Customs.
